Three Oaks Outdoor Science School provides a hands-on education, with students exploring and interacting with their natural environment. The concept of outdoor education has grown from an education belief that learning about natural science can best be achieved through interaction with the environment. Outdoor education has become a California state-sanctioned portion of the overall education experience. Three Oaks Outdoor Science School's curriculum corresponds with the science framework adopted by the California Department of Education.
At Outdoor Science School, students receive instruction from trained naturalists in astronomy, botany, ecology, geology, meteorology and zoology. Students are encouraged to gather, process and record information as it related to the natural sciences. Three Oaks Outdoor Science School uses a multi-technique approach to learning: indoor or outdoor lesson preview, trail hiking, directed exploration, related games and group problem solving discussions.
Outdoor Science School is also about social development. Students are placed in a residential setting, away from everyday distractions, TV, computer games, game boys, and the comforts of home. Students then experience a feeling of independence within a safe, supervised cabin group. We see changes in the kids once they have been removed from the fast-paced, stressful environment of city living and have been given the chance to see themselves as competent, valuable and worthwhile individuals who can also be team players.
